A free GOV.UK service. It tells most government departments at once, including HMRC, DWP, DVLA, the Passport Office and the council. Use the reference number the registrar gives you.

The letter

Before you get in touch

You can claim back a season ticket or pay as you go credit on the person's Oyster card. If you're their husband, wife, civil partner, son or daughter, they'll ask for a copy of the death certificate. If the refund is over £100, they'll also want a certified copy of probate. Anyone else claiming will need a letter of indemnity.
